"the rachel maddow show" starts right now. >> good evening, ed. thanks. and thanks to you at home for joining us this hour. it was a strange bomb shell in washington today. a little bit of news that came from an unexpected source. bob woodward got his hands on an audio recording of the top commanding general in afghanistan meeting off the record with a fox news analyst. the meeting took place last spring. it was general david petraeus who was at the time commander of all u.s. forces in the war in afghanistan. and on the tape, fox news analyst says that she was asked by her boss, by the chairman of fox news to pass along some very specific advice for general petraeus. >> if you're offered chairman, take it. if you're offered anything else, don't take it. resign in six months and run for president. okay? and i know you're not running for president, but at some point when you go to new york next, you may want to just chat with roger. i just say what i have suggested and that we've discussed is next time you go to new york you're going to
at sandy hook elementary school. six adults including 29-year-old rachel davino who dressed up in costume and broke out in song to help her students learn. and ann marie murphy whose parents say shield some of her students from the hail of bullets. full-time substitute teacher lauren russo dreamed as a little girl of becoming a teacher, even making a set of dolls her first classroom of students. mary was the school psychologist who for years helped children deal with life's terrible challenges. when the first shots were fired, she and school principal dawn hochsprung quickly headed toward the danger. the two women reportedly lunged at the gunman and died trying to overtake him. there was also 27-year-old teacher vickie lee soto who died trying to protect her students. >> their father, carlos, was up the other night identifying vickie's body and was just told kind of how she was found, protecting her kids, doing instinctively what she knew to do, protecting her children. >> the gunman's mother, nancy lanza, was the first victim last friday, shot by her own son in their own home. and the ki

. dawn hochsprung, avenlg 27. anne marie murphy, age 52. lauren rousseau, 30. mary sherlach, 56. rachel davino, age 49. madam speaker, these were real people, real victims, real children and real pictures of newtown, connecticut. the people of connecticut can relate to these victims of the assault and all americans can relate to some extent this crime that's occurred. at this elementary school. madam speaker, i have four kids and 10 grandkids, three of my daughters are teachers by profession. my wife is a first grade elementary school teacher. and no parent, no parent ever wants to bury their child. they just don't want to do that. we never want our children to die in their youth. like these children did. so, madam speaker, we mourn with the families of connecticut. we must honor the victims in our prayers and in our words and ask the good lord to bless them, their families, the people of connecticut and yes, our country. and that's just the way it is. i yield back. the speaker pro tempore: the gentleman's time has expired. the chair recognizes the gentleman from oregon, mr. blumenauer,
